The list of the millennial companies? No. It's the list of websites and services that are restricted in China. One might wonder, how their life would be different if one service listed above were to disappear from their life for a single day. But in the case of China, the Chinese Government has complete censorship of what their people can access on the Internet.

If you are wondering if China is the only country who are following this practice, you're wrong. There is an exhaustive list of Countries that follow strict censorship over websites that their Citizens are allowed to view.

  1. North Korea & China - They have the most strict and definitive guidelines for censorship.
  2. Iran
  3. Belarus, Qatar Syria, Thailand and UAE . . .

Now one might argue regarding the pros and cons when it comes to censorship on Internet but bear with me as things take a turn towards the worse.

Now to understand it better, we need to look into how restriction works within these countries.

  1. Restricting websites by blocking access to them
  2. Enforcing strict laws of action against people who try and breakthrough to use websites that may be on the restrictive list of the country's government.

How does blocking a website work?

The countries pay companies to list websites, say; as pornographic or forums talking about political views. These companies then list every single website in an exhaustive list and restrict access to them for the specified country. Use of VPN you ask? Well, most of these countries have banned VPNs except for a few government-approved ones, and those are basically useless.

Fact, the "Internet Service Providers Association of India" started charging a commission on overseas internet websites. The overseas websites would be required to pay the Indian Government a fee in the view that its citizens could access their website.

There are a few old school ways to still try and get a hold of websites you might need to access, but most of these have been outdated, or break their functionality when dealing with modern websites on MERN/MEAN stack.

Here is a list of ways in which you can TRY to access blocked websites in restricted countries.

I wouldn't go into details in the ways listed here, but here is the overview of the approach.

  1. Accessing websites by email: Certain Services would let you send the URL of a website over an email to them and would send back the requested website over email. These would be almost useless in the case of e-commerce websites or websites that require user interaction in each step.
  2. peek-a-booty.org - This works by linking all computers to a network and when you request a restricted website, grabs it through another computer and sends it back.

The irony with Freedom of Speech is the fact that it's more profitable to suppress it instead.
